I have made a lot of progress with this project. Since I am planning an event and it is slowly creeping up on the calender, I am starting to feel the pressure that comes with event planning.
Since I was unable to find a professional beep baseball team to play against our team, I had to go to my Plan B. Our team will be split in half and they will play against each other. I will be able to provide blindfolds through a woman who hosted the event prior to myself. I have purchased a beep baseball which will be donated to Campabilities, a camp that teaches beep baseball after the event. The team is able to provide hitting T's and bases. In order to know where the bases are, volunteers will stand by the bases and clap for the players so they will be able to locate the bases themselves. All of this has been explained to the players through many lengthy emails.
I am in the process of having flyers made in order to promote the event and to also provide the professors with deliverables to have a better idea of what will be going on. My next goal will be to develop a media list to get the local media outlets to cover the event. I also have a spreadsheet to keep track of which outlets represent which area. The list includes a lot of the players' hometowns so they will be able to have local coverage as well. I also hope to reach out to student affairs for help in promoting the event campus wide.
Also, one of the players sent me a video of a real beep baseball game which has been helpful to them in learning how to play. Check it out below:

PR and the Social Network
For the last portion of my research, I chose to examine an article I found entitled "An Updated Examination of Social and Emerging Media Use in Public Relations Practice". The article itself is an analysis performed by Public Relations professors and PRSA board members on how social media is affecting the industry of public relations and changing the way it is practiced. The study focuses on what I like to refer to as the "core four", or the four main social media outlets,: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. The study found that, over the past nine years (2006-2014), emerging technology has made communication with a certain public more dynamic and sufficient.
The study goes on to discuss how expansion of the Internet has affected not just public relations practices, but also how publics communicate with each other. The evolution of tablets, IPods, cell phones and other technological devices has made it more convenient to access not only the Internet but any social media outlet desired by the client. Technology has managed to put social media directly at our fingertips which makes for better communication. The change in technology has also brought strategic communication and public relations into the age of new media, where now the focus of marketing and advertising and promotion is on a Tweet or a Facebook status whereas befor it was centered around newspaper coverage. Ethics has played a bigger role in the field as well because organizations want to make sure that they are correctly portrayed and represented online and on social media.
I chose to use this article as part of my research because social media plays a huge role in my world and the world of public relations as far as promotion goes. I am hoping to have social media coverage of my event using the department of communication's accounts. Learning about how social media is re-shaping public relations has helped me to come up with new and interesting ways to promote/cover the event and how to maximize social media usage to the best of my ability.

How Does This Product Make You Feel?
The third article that I chose to do my research on was entitled "Connecting to a Cause". The article itself describes an experiment that was performed by university students to test how a personal response to one's product affects how that product will perform in the social market. The article mentions Toms Shoes and how people do not buy them simply because they like them but because they are afforded the chance to pay it forward. Now that more and more organizations are becoming active on social media, the experiment was put in place to see if social media truly does impact the relationship developed between an organization and its publics.
The study observed two blogs for Toms Shoes and compares the dialogic (style of phrases/ words) features on various blogs, whether they were high or low. Research participants then looked at the two blogs and filled out a questionaire to discuss their feelings towards both. The control group was told to fill it out based off of perception and prior experience than interaction. The results showed that a blog with high dialogic settings earned a better reponse.
This case study was helpful to me because in my social media class, my grou was assigned the communication department's blog. I hope to promote my educational event using the department s blog and learning how to get the best response from viewers has been helpful. It has been helpful to tie in what I am learning in class to my project and this case study helped me with both.

Media Madness
The second article that I have chosen to review and use for my project is entitled "A Qualitative Examination on the Impact of Social Media of Media Relations Practices" found in the PR Journal located on the PRSA website.
The article discusses how public relations has integrated social media into part of its daily practice and how social media has become a major tool for public relations practitioners to have at their disposal. Due to the fact that the majority of an audience is active on social media, it is important that a business or organization have a presence on all social media platforms as a way to stay informed and connected with their audience. However, when it comes to the idea of media relations, the use of social media is almost non existent. This is due to the fact that, according to the article, journalists prefer to get their information from a direct source rather than a "timeline" or "feed". The article proceeds to do a case study discussing the relationship between journalists and public relations practitioners and how it can be improved by integrating social media into the field of media relations.
Media Relations plays a huge role in Public Relations and promotion. In order for my event to reach a large audience, I need to contact local media sources. Knowing how to build an element of trust with the media, as discussed in this article, will help me as I draw nearer to the event. Social media can be a huge help in terms of promotion and I plan to use it as a tool when promoting my event. Learning how social media is changing the way relationships are built in the realm of public relations has been helpful to me as I begin to create a media list as well as discover who my audience really is.

A Perfect Plan
One of the academic resources that I have been finding to be particularly helpful is an article entitled "Does Planning and Practice Make Perfect?" It is located on the PRSA website as part of their academic journal.
The article itself deals with crisis communication from the viewpoint of top organizations in the world of public relations. A case study was performed to determine if organizations that claim to have a plan in the event of a crisis end up not managing the crisis in the best way. A crisis is defined three ways in the reading. The first definition was "a major unpredictable event that has potentially negative results". A crisis is also defined as an intense event scrutinized by the media or "a major occurancence that could have a potentially negative outcome". The article goes on to state that the key factor for an organization in the event of a crisis is communication whether it be internal, within the organization or external, with the public. When, where, and how a crisis will occur is unpredictable. Therefore, the plan put into place by the organization may not always work. It is important that the organization be transparent in what is going on to prevent a crisis from escalating.
The article goes on to talk about "communication culture" which means two-way communication is vital for an organization. It also mentions "communication autonomy" which is how much responsibility an organization is taking for the crisis. The article then goes into a case study of whether or not organizations are prepared in the event of a crisis.
This article has been valuable to me because, as someone who is planning an event for their capstone, I have to keep in mind that something may and/or will go wrong and I need to be prepared. By remembering to have open communication and to have a flexible plan in place, I may be better equipped to handle a crisis if one should arise. It's all part of the planing process.

One Team and A Beeping Ball
For my Capstone assignment, I would like to have a fundraising event for medical research that is being performed to cure rare eye diseases. (The name of the disease escapes me at the moment). The fundraiser would be to have a baseball game but, instead of baseball, it is beep ball, a version of baseball created for people who are visually impaired. I would plan the whole day and include on campus organizations as well as reach out to Shepherdstown for community involvement. It would be an event and a PR campaign combined. It would help with my passion for event planning and my hope to one day work in the field of Public Relations.
